We regularly carry out thermographic corrosion under insulation (CUI) surveys.
Corrosion under insulation is a major problem, particularly in the oil & gas industry and is caused when water (usually rain water) enters pipeline and vessel insulation. This creates conditions where significant corrosion can then occur on the outside of the vessel or pipework.
Many refineries or platforms have a strategy of replacing all insulation on a periodic basis which is extremely costly! A thermographic survey can identify areas of CUI while the plant is running normally. Detected areas are then investigated and replaced which greatly reduces cost to the client.
The image shows an area which has been damaged by a scaffolding pole and is allowing rainwater to enter the insulation.
